The Artek Kanto by Pancho Nikander is a beautiful example of Finnish design where simplicity, material, and functionality come together perfectly. Designed in 2004, Kanto effortlessly fulfills two functions: use it as an elegant magazine holder next to the sofa or as a practical wood basket for firewood.

The shape appears almost naturally simple, but behind the design lies a clever construction. Kanto is manufactured from a single sheet of die-cast birch plywood. By bending the wood in a fluid motion, a sturdy, open form is created without unnecessary details.

In this way, Kanto aligns beautifully with Artek's long tradition of experimenting with curved and shaped wood. In this version, the birch plywood is stained with a warm walnut color, combining the natural look of the wood with a richer and more subdued color.

With its height of 56.5 cm and characteristic curved silhouette, Kanto is both functional and decorative. Next to the fireplace, it provides space for logs, while in the living room or study, it forms a stylish spot for books, newspapers, and favorite magazines.

About Pancho Nikander

Pancho Nikander (1981) is a Finnish designer and boat builder. He was born in Mexico and lives and works in Finland. His most famous design is the Kanto, which he designed for Artek in 2004. The design demonstrates how simple material processing can result in a functional and recognizable everyday object.
