Designed by Børge Mogensen.
The Spanish Chair is an undisputed icon of Danish design and was designed in 1958 by Børge Mogensen for Fredericia. The armchair embodies Mogensen's vision of honest craftsmanship, functionality, and timeless aesthetics. The design features a robust frame of solid oak combined with a seat and backrest made of sturdy, vegetable-tanned leather.
The characteristic, wide armrests are inspired by chairs Mogensen saw during his travels through Spain, in regions where Moorish and Islamic influences were evident in traditional furniture. These generous armrests function not only for comfortable support but also as practical side tables – eliminating the need for an additional side table and making the space feel more open.
The name Spanish Chair refers to a medieval Spanish furniture technique in which saddle leather was stretched across a solid wood frame. Mogensen previously experimented with this construction, including in his famous Hunting Lodge Collection from 1950. The Spanish Chair perfectly combines the rustic character of this lodge furniture with a refined, modern look.
The armchair is still manufactured in Denmark today and is known for its exceptional durability. As the leather and wood age, they develop a unique patina that only enhances the chair's beauty.
