The GUBI Silk Lantern Floor Lamp blends the serene atmosphere of traditional Japanese lanterns with the clean design language of Danish modernism. Designed by Ejnar Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen, the piece was first presented at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1951 but never went into production at the time. Decades later, GUBI is finally bringing this remarkable design to life.

At its heart is the elongated silk shade, which softly filters the light to cast a warm, diffuse glow. The light, almost weightless appearance of the silk lantern creates a refined contrast with the slender yet sturdy steel frame.

Details in walnut veneer and antique brass add warmth and sophistication, highlighting the distinctive use of materials. The combination of silk, wood, brass, and steel gives the Silk Lantern an elegant balance between Japanese lighting traditions and Scandinavian furniture design.

Standing 163 cm tall with an impressive 70 cm high shade, the Silk Lantern commands a striking vertical presence. Yet, thanks to its slender construction, the design remains visually light. This makes the lamp a beautiful choice beside a sofa or lounge chair, or as a standalone lighting piece in a quiet corner of the living room or bedroom.

About Larsen & Bender Madsen

Danish designers Ejnar Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen originally created the Silk Lantern for the 1951 Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen. Although the design was showcased there, the lamp did not enter mass production at the time.

With its reintroduction by GUBI, this historic design is once again accessible, bringing a unique blend of Danish modernism and Japanese inspiration into contemporary interiors.
