A range of lamps in different spherical silhouettes, the Nelson Bubble Lamps from Hay add a touch of softness and brightness to your interior. In collaboration with Herman Miller, Hay has reintroduced this series, this series of lamps were originally designed in 1947.

Nelson was inspired by a set of silk-covered Swedish pendant lamps he wanted to purchase for his office, but found the price prohibitive. An ingenious and resourceful designer, he went on to create the first set of Nelson Bubble Lamps using a translucent white plastic spray, a technique developed by the US military at the time. Nelson drew on elementary, organic shapes when creating variations such as the Apple Bubble pendant lamp and the saucer pendant lamp.

The atypical shape of the lamp is constructed from a steel frame, over which a coating of plastic polymer is sprayed. This surface coating is somewhere between transparent and opaque, so the lamp emits a warm, friendly glow. The ring at the top and bottom of the lamp is made of coated and polished nickel. It is supplied with white PVC cable and steel ceiling plate.

About the designer:
