The Marimekko Lokki rug is a distinctive designer piece that brings together organic shapes, natural materials, and timeless Finnish design. The iconic Lokki pattern, created by Maija Isola in 1961, serves as the foundation for this expressive design. The inspiration for Lokki—which means "seagull" in Finnish—came to Maija Isola when she observed sunlight filtering through a curtain, casting wavy shadows across the fabric. She translated this unique interplay of light, motion, and textile into a bold, rhythmic pattern that has since become one of Marimekko’s most recognizable classics.

The rug is hand-tufted from 100% New Zealand wool and features a soft, comfortable pile with a height of 1.2 cm. The natural wool lends a warm aesthetic to the design and provides a pleasant texture underfoot.

The Marimekko Lokki rug is produced in collaboration with the Dutch carpet manufacturer Brink & Campman, a company renowned for its expertise in high-quality designer rugs.

The Lokki pattern was designed in 1961 by Maija Isola, one of the most significant designers in Marimekko’s history.

The inspiration stemmed from an everyday yet remarkable visual moment: sunlight shining through a curtain, creating undulating shapes within the fabric. Isola translated this natural movement into a graphic pattern featuring broad, flowing lines. The design combines a distinct visual identity with a surprising sense of simplicity.

The organic shapes bring dynamism to an interior space without sacrificing their tranquil character—ensuring that, even decades after its introduction, Lokki remains a remarkably contemporary design.

A pile height of 1.2 cm provides a pleasing texture, while the hand-tufted construction allows the design’s fluid lines to stand out clearly.

The backing consists of cotton and latex, which contribute to the rug’s structural integrity and stability.

This combination creates a graphic accent that feels both serene and sophisticated. The rug pairs beautifully with light-toned woods, walnut, natural stone, linen, and contemporary designer furniture.

About Maija Isola

Maija Isola (1927–2001) was an influential Finnish textile designer and one of the primary creative forces behind Marimekko.

Her designs are renowned for their expressive patterns, bold compositions, and unique use of color and form.

Isola drew inspiration from nature, travel, architecture, and everyday observations. She translated these influences into iconic textile designs that played a pivotal role in the development of modern Finnish design. With the Lokki pattern, created in 1961, she brought forth a timeless classic in which light, movement, and simplicity come together in a remarkable way.

For the care of your Marimekko Lokki rug, we recommend the following:

Regular vacuuming: vacuum the rug gently to remove dust and loose dirt particles.

Treating stains: carefully blot stains using a clean cloth and clean, lukewarm water.

Avoid vigorous rubbing: treat stains gently to prevent damage to the wool fibers.

With a new wool rug, some loose wool fibers may initially shed. This is a normal characteristic of natural wool and typically decreases over time.
