Artek Rope Chair.

The Rope Chair was designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for the Finnish Artek. The French brothers are known for reimagining traditional furniture in a modern and flexible way, which is again visible in this design.

The rope chair is a minimalist chair with a tubular steel frame and a seat made of pressed beech plywood and ash veneer. The main component of the Rope Chair is the pliable rope that allows the users to adjust their posture. The rope runs through the tubular frame, making the backrest and armrest flexible.

The ancient material rope has played a crucial role in the cultural and technical development of mankind. About two years ago, designer brothers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec began exploring a design approach that was as direct as possible, which would result in the creation of Rope Chair. They were surprised to realize that a single rope had never been used as a structural and taxing element in furniture before.

The Artek Kaari collection is also made by them. In both designs, the technical expertise is clearly combined with graceful artistry. Surprising silhouettes meet sophisticated constructions in a synthesis of art and technology that is as fresh as when Artek was founded.

About the designers:

The Bouroullec brothers, Ronan (born 1971) and Erwan (born 1976) were born in Brittany, France and their design studio is based in Paris. The brothers have become one of the most successful designers in France, having designed for companies such as Artek, Iittala, Vitra, Alessi, Magis, Flos and Hay. The Bouroullec brothers have also won numerous awards, for example the Steelwood Chair for Magis won the prestigious Compasso D'Oro in 2011.
