Description

Lyfa Gothic 1 Wall lamp.

The gothic wall lamp is characteristic and a lamp with character, a design by Bent Karlby. The premium solid brass fixture emits soft upward light that leaves a beautiful pattern on the wall, while the brushed surfaces are subtly illuminated by the narrow slits. The gothic series is a wonderful example of Bent Karlby's unique area and create designs that would transcend their inspiration.

The GOTHIC wall lamp by Bent Karlby is a design from 1970, and will be 50 years old in 2020. Surprisingly, information about the series is limited, making GOTHIC an intriguing piece of Danish design mystery. The GOTHIC name was a reference by Karlby to the Gothic architectural style that flourished across Europe from the 12th to the 16th century, which was characterized by high narrow structures with pointed arches.

The GOTHIC series consists of two wall lamps with one or two geometric shades. Each shade is made from a solid brass plate with vertical brush lines folded in the center to create its iconic, recognizable expression.

About Bent Karlby.

Bent Karlby (1912–98) came to lighting design late in his career, and was until fairly recently more widely known for his involvement in other fields of the decorative arts, most notably the floral-themed wallpaper designs he created for Dahls Tapetkunst, Göteborg's Tapetfabrik and others, some of which are now held in the permanent collections of major design museums including London's Victoria & Albert.

Karlby is recognised as a fine art painter and his oil paintings were exhibited internationally in the 1940s. He also designed furniture and wrote a seminal book on interior design entitled Bo For To, published in 1942. His lighting designs date from the late 1950s to the early 1970s, and his portfolio includes several of Lyfa's most sought-after designs including the Påfugl and the Kvadrille.
