How do you ensure a design stands the test of time?
According to String Furniture, the answer is simple: create a perfect balance between function and form, and continually refine the design so it evolves with the times. This is precisely why the airy, flexible String system has become a global design icon and an example of pure Scandinavian minimalism.
The story begins in 1949, when the Swedish publishing house Bonniers launched a design competition for an affordable, lightweight, and easy-to-ship wall shelving unit. Nils and Kajsa Strinning won with their ingenious solution: a modular shelving unit that was easy to assemble, expandable, and incredibly elegant. Thus, String was born—and Nils Strinning became one of the most influential designers of the Scandinavian modern era.
In the years that followed, Nils (a visionary architect) and Kajsa (an artistic and meticulous designer) refined their design into a system that is infinitely configurable: shelves, cabinets, folding tables, workstations… everything could be seamlessly added. The result? A timeless shelving unit that is not only beautiful, but above all, lives with its user.
Today, String is more modern than ever. The collection includes:
String System – the classic modular system
String Pocket – the smaller, more playful version
String Works™ – contemporary solutions for home and professional environments
The system continues to evolve and add new functions, while remaining true to the same values from 1949: simplicity, flexibility, and Scandinavian clarity. String has won numerous design awards, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale (1954) and the German Design Award (2016), and is recognized as a work of applied art under copyright law.
Whichever configuration you choose, every String arrangement creates more space, more tranquility, and more beauty in your daily life—a system that literally and figuratively grows with you.
