Artek Aalto Day Bed 710.

The Day Bed 710 from Finnish Artek is a versatile bed, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1933. Like many other Aalto furniture, the Day Bed 710 has the famous L-leg structure developed by Aalto: the frame made of birch wood and the slatted base on low legs are curved in a shape of an L.

The natural light color and the strong structure of birch make the daybed 710 a perfect minimalist and airy reclining / sitting sofa, cat bed or guest bed.

About the designer and the story:

In the late 1920s, architect and designer Alvar Aalto began to experiment with bending wood. In collaboration with furniture manufacturer Otto Korhonen, the Finnish master developed a groundbreaking process that resulted in the L-leg. To make the L leg, cuts are made in the end of a piece of wood, with the slits extending just below the level of the planned bend.

Then wood veneer strips are inserted and glued. This simplifies the bending process and increases the stability of the part. Aalto called the L-leg 'the little sister of the architectural column', and its arrival heralded a break with a long tradition of furniture production.

Patented by Aalto in 1933, this technique meant that the warm, organic properties of wood could be used to form stable, durable designs. The system of standard components allowed the creation of more than 50 versatile products.

More about the designer:

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is probably the most famous Finnish architect and designer in the world. In 1921, Alvar Aalto obtained an architecture degree from the Helsinki Institute of Technology and started his career as an architect. One of the most important works he commissioned was the planning of the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland.

This project also marked the beginning of Aalto's career as a furniture designer - in fact, this was the first Aalto planned building to be fully furnished with furniture designed by Aalto himself - including the lighting. Other major projects completed by Alvar Aalto include Viipuri Municipal Library, Villa Mairea, La Maison Carré and the Finnish pavilions for the 1937 Paris and 1939 New York World's Fairs.
