The Artek Aalto Armchair 400, better known as the Tank Chair, was designed by Alvar Aalto and is one of the most characteristic armchairs in the Artek collection. In the version with Zebra Brown / White upholstery, the timeless design takes on a warm and graphic look.

The Armchair 400 was presented at the Milan Triennale in 1936, where the armchair immediately attracted a great deal of attention. Unlike many of Aalto's earlier, more refined chair designs, the Tank has a distinctly generous silhouette. The wide, curved armrests of laminated birch wood enclose the soft seat and backrest, giving the armchair its recognizable, almost sculptural form.

Despite its powerful proportions, the armchair appears surprisingly airy. The flowing lines of the birch wood frame form a beautiful contrast with the generous upholstery. The low seat height and comfortable suspension invite you to lean back and relax.

Original Zebra upholstery

A special feature of this version is the Artek Zebra fabric in brown and white. The graphic Zebra fabric is one of the classic upholstery styles that was paired with Aalto's furniture early on. About Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is one of the most important Finnish architects and designers of the twentieth century. His designs are known for their organic forms, innovative use of bent wood, and unique combination of functionality and human warmth.

Aalto designed not only buildings but also the furniture and lighting for his architectural projects. Projects such as the Paimio Sanatorium, Villa Mairea, and the Viipuri Library became icons of modernism. Together with his wife Aino Aalto and several partners, he founded Artek in 1935.
