About the designer:
Japanese designer Fujiwo Ishimoto (b. 1941) is known for his refined textile and ceramic designs that exude balance and tranquility. Inspired by Maija Isola’s iconic fabrics in the 1960s, Ishimoto travelled to Finland to discover the world of Marimekko – a move that would change his career forever.
He has been a permanent member of Marimekko since 1974, where he has made a significant contribution to the development of their signature style. His designs combine Japanese aesthetics with Scandinavian simplicity, as can be seen beautifully in the beloved Ujo towel collection – a classic within Marimekko’s bath textile range.
In addition to textiles, Ishimoto is also active as a ceramic artist. Since 1989, he has created unique ceramic artworks in the Arabia Art Department, and in the same year his work was awarded a grant from the Arabia Cultural Foundation.
Ishimoto’s work embodies understated beauty, craftsmanship and a deep respect for materials – perfectly suited to a contemporary interior where quality and tranquility are key.
