The instantly recognizable Unikko pattern came into being in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, publicly announced that Marimekko would no longer design floral fabrics. Textile designer Maija Isola, however, did not like rules or restrictions and in protest designed a complete collection with bold floral patterns called Unikko, Finnish for "poppy". Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko’s most famous patterns, adorning objects ranging from fabrics and bedding to Sami Ruotsalainen’s sleek Oiva tableware collection.
