Description

Gubi 1967 Pendant lamp.

Gubi is re-releasing this iconic and elegant 1950s Paavo Tynell lamp, meticulously crafted with luxurious materials such as brass.

The now classic Paavo Tynell's series of lamps was developed in various variations during the 1950s. Each variant is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, with subtle yet very intricate and difficult details, including hand-punched copper perforations and hand-sewn bamboo strips.

The original Tynell hanging lamp, produced until 1972, had a shade made of Finnish aspen slats. The canopy was later replaced by bamboo, a material with the same visual qualities, durability and flexibility as aspen, but which grows quickly and is therefore more quickly renewable.

The Ø60cm versions (A1967 and A1972) are also available with an optional brass counterweight, which allows the user to easily adjust the height of the lamp using a pulley system. The counterweight is made from one block of milled brass.

Due to the natural materials of the two shades, most of the light is directed downwards, creating a diffused cozy glow around the shade and upwards.

A central core holds the shade in place, with a polished copper canopy at the top of the wire, connecting the lamp to the ceiling.

The material used is: Canvas linnen shade or bamboo shade(1972 pendant), brass counterweight and finish, gold-plated textile cord

Dimensions 1967: Ø56 x H20.3 cm. Cord golden textile 400 cm.

About the designer:

Paavo Tynell (1890-1973) was a Finnish industrial designer who specialized in lighting design. Paavo Tynell started his career in Helsinki at the beginning of the 20th century in a Finnish metal art forge company. Tynell qualified as a master craftsman in 1913. At the same time he studied at Taideteollisuus Keskuskoulu (today the Helsinki University of Industrial Arts), where he eventually worked as a teacher.

In 1918 Paavo Tynell founded his own company Oy Taito Ab with Gösta Serlachius, Emil Wickström, Eric Ehrström and Frans Nykänen. Taito Oy began to focus more on lamps in the 1930s, with Paavo Tynell as chief designer and CEO.
