Claesson Koivisto Rune’s Uno is a friendly reminder from nature in two sizes, and of course you can sit on this mushroom resembling piece of furniture.

Uno was designed for a hotel where flexibility is of paramount importance’ says Eero Koivisto. ’Perched on a seating without backrest, as in the Far East, you will also adopt a more active body language. Eero Koivisto notes that benches and stools are a common feature in Japan, not the least in restaurants and bars, and they impose an attentive seating position, which contribute to vibrant discussions.

Claesson Koivisto Rune renovated the legendary Grand Hotel Terminus in Bergen, Norway, and created Uno as a pouf for the Amundsen Whisky bar. The warm, amber-colored interior framed by beams and paneling all in wood, along with impressive high stained-glass windows, was to keep its original feel. Almost identical to when the explorer Amundsen 1928 held his press conference by the big fireplace, before disappearing on his last Arctic rescue mission. Uno complement Finn Juhls Pelican chairs along with luscious sofas and small tables in the historic setting, allowing for an even more easily reconfigurable space.

Uno is no exception to care and attention to details. A finely crafted structure in wood supports a padding material of different density: firm yet soft. And there is an obvious pragmatism in how easily the pouf can be moved around, and how the recessed base allows for the foot when raising up from a seated position. Uno will let both homes and public spaces be furnished in new ways. We do sit differently, closer to the floor, bringing kids and grown-ups together, in a way that was quite rare in the past. Furniture pieces that allow for a new flexibility are direly in need. Design objects needs to be friendly, not hard, sharp, or aggressive, says Eero Koivisto, design should make you comfortable and at ease.

Fruit baskets for Cappellini, a video set for Kylie Minogue, textiles for Almedahl, task lamps for Wästbergs, interiors for restaurant Operakällaren and Nobis Hotel in Stockholm, carpets for Asplund, jewellery for Gallery Pascale, not to mention the architecture of the Sfera building in Kyoto. ”Multidisciplinary” seems like a good word to describe Eero Koivisto, Ola Rune and Mårten Claesson, founders of the Stockholm-based office for architecture and design that bears their surnames. Founded in 1995 by the three former classmates from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, the studio quickly gained international acclaim and was the first Swedish architects ever to be exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Today the Claesson Koivisto Rune office is located in Stockholm’s Södermalm district with a staff of about twelve.

When asked about their design philosophy the trio answers that their work is not limited by any defined regulations, but that their only focus is to develop, to improve and never to repeat themselves. They try to engage in any exciting projects that turn up, and architecture and design are equally important to them.
