Product information

Vitra Akari 45X pendant lamp Ø43.

This enchanting Akari Light Sculptures by Vitra  is sculptor Isamu Noguchi's modern interpretation of the Japanese paper lanterns.

The first fixtures were designed in 1951, while Noguchi stayed in Gifu, Japan, drawing inspiration from the traditional lanterns used by local fishermen for night fishing on the Nagara River. Today, the iconic collection consists of more than a hundred lightweight table, floor and pendant lamps in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes.

The Akari lamps are handcrafted from ribbed bamboo and translucent washi paper made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Isamu Noguchi has compared Akari's light to sunlight filtered through traditional sh shji paper doors - the light sculptures create a warm glow and a pleasant atmosphere.

A quote from Noguchi: "All you need to start a house is a room, a tatami and Akari."
